Dr. Janez Ekart graduated in 1985 from the University of Maribor, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Informatics and Computer Science, earning the title of Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
In 2001, he obtained the scientific title of Master of Technical Sciences in the field of technical environmental protection. He defended his master's thesis entitled Comprehensive municipal waste management at the regional level under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Niko Samec. He also received his doctorate under his mentorship. The title of his doctoral dissertation: Development of methodology and procedures for the production of solid fuels from waste.

In his rich career, which lasts more than 40 years, he has performed a number of demanding tasks in leading or managerial positions in the economy. He has participated in numerous important projects, including in the field of Renewable Energy Sources from Waste and led a development and research project at Gorenje Surovina. He also publishes scientific and professional papers and has two patents published. His pedagogical experience dates back to 2005, namely as a lecturer at the Maribor College of Transport in the post-secondary professional program "Municipalities and Environmental Protection", where he teaches the subject "Municipal Energy" and Selected Chapters on Waste. He also collaborates with DOBA Maribor and is a habilitated lecturer at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana in the study program Technical Environmental Protection for the subject area Environmental Engineering. At the Ptuj College of Technology, he is habilitated for the field of Engineering and teaches two subjects: Energetics in Bionics and Ecology in Technology.
