Siemens, as a trusted provider of onshore wind energy technology, is constantly innovating and developing new technologies to improve efficiency, sustainability and product quality. They are committed to developing best-in-class turbine solutions and setting new industry standards, backed by more than 40 years of experience and 110 gigawatts installed worldwide. They increase the efficiency of Siemens wind turbines with proven technologies and solutions tailored to each project and different site conditions. One of these technologies is DinoTails® Next Generation.

Operating turbines within certain noise levels is critical for a significant percentage of onshore wind projects. Due to local noise regulations, many wind turbines must operate at limited power outputs, producing less energy (typically 2-4% AEP – electrical power per dB – decibel per meter). However, quiet wind turbines can produce more energy, resulting in a lower levelized cost of energy.

The DinoTails® concept was introduced in 2000. As an aerodynamic addition to the blade, it reduces sound power levels by using a serrated trailing edge mounted on the blade. This cutting-edge technology, inspired by the silent flight of an owl, enhances the beneficial effect of the serrated edge by adding finer combs between the teeth. These fine combs create small flow structures, further reducing noise.

Siemens Gamesa tested the DinoTails® Next Generation using advanced validation methods, which combine acoustic and aerodynamic wind turbine tests with highly accelerated lifetime and power/noise curve measurements in the field. The results showed robust performance with significant noise reduction at all wind speeds without loss of power.

This technology is now available for offshore wind turbine platforms with significant improvements. With a layout tailored to each turbine type, this leading noise reduction technology enables them to create value for customers by maximizing electrical output and reducing levelized energy costs in locations with noise constraints.
